About the Bee:
The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational program operating under the auspices of The E.W. Scripps Company. They partner with more than 250 community businesses and organizations to bring the program to students in the United States and around the world. These businesses and organizations help Scripps make a difference by administering spelling bees and honoring youth achievement. It’s a win-win combination for the children who deserve the recognition and for the community who appreciates the spotlight on education and youth achievement.
The purpose of the Bee is simple: to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. Scripps believes that skill in using words o good effect is the greatest determinant of success and will benefit children wherever their dreams may take them.
The relationships The E.W. Scripps Company has with schools touch thousands of teachers and more than 11 million students each year. In celebrating academic achievement and inspiring children to show off their skills in spelling bees-much like athletes do in sporting events-they gain valuable experience in problem solving and public speaking. These experiences give them self-assurance to stand confidently on their own at music and theater auditions, class presentations, and interviews for scholarships and jobs.
